Take Care

Everyday Care

  • Remove before engaging in sports, performing manual tasks, showering/swimming, and sleeping.

  • Avoid impacts, heat, and sudden temperature changes.

  • Keep pieces separate in soft pouches or lined compartments to prevent scratches.

  • Clean most jewellery with lukewarm water, mild detergent-free soap, and a soft brush or lint-free cloth.

  • Rinse well and pat dry. Always check for loose settings before cleaning.

Solid Gold (9K, 14K, 18K)

  • Wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth after each wear to remove oils and perspiration.

  • Avoid chlorine, bleach, and household cleaners, which can corrode gold alloys.

  • For mixed stone settings, always use the gentlest method suitable for the most delicate stone present.

Solid Gold (22K & 24K)

Gold jewellery with a purity of 22 karats (91.6% pure gold) and 24 karats (99.9% pure gold) is highly prized for its luxurious lustre and rich colour. However, the higher the purity, the softer and more malleable the gold — meaning it can gently mould to the wearer over time.

This subtle shaping is a hallmark of genuine, high-purity gold and is not considered a fault but rather a reflection of its natural character and craftsmanship.

  • Handle your jewellery with care, avoiding unnecessary pressure or force.

  • Remove pieces before sport, manual work, gardening, or heavy lifting to prevent bending or warping.

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from humidity and direct sunlight.

  • To avoid scratches or tangled chains, store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined compartment.

  • Clean occasionally with warm water, a mild detergent-free soap, and a soft-bristled brush.

  • Rinse gently, pat dry, and finish by polishing with a soft cloth to restore its radiant shine.

  • When cleaning, take extra care around stone settings or engraved details to avoid catching loose fibres.

Pearl Care

  • Pearls are organic gems and can be permanently damaged by acids, perspiration, alcohol, perfume, and hairspray.

  • Last on, first off” — apply cosmetics and fragrance before putting pearls on, and remove them immediately after wear.

  • Wipe gently with a slightly damp, soft cloth after each use to remove body oils and maintain lustre.

  • Never soak pearls or use ultrasonic/steam cleaners — this can weaken the nacre and loosen adhesives.

  • Store flat and separately, ideally in a soft silk or microfibre pouch (not plastic, which can trap moisture).

  • Have strands re-strung periodically if worn often — the silk thread can stretch or weaken over time.

Opal Care

  • Opals are porous and contain natural water; they are sensitive to dry heat, chemicals, and rapid temperature changes.

  • Avoid prolonged soaking, ultrasonic, or steam cleaning — these can cause crazing (fine cracks)

  • Clean gently with a slightly damp soft cloth or a brief rinse in lukewarm, mildly soapy water (detergent-free).

  • Rinse quickly and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

  • Store away from heat sources and direct sunlight; avoid leaving in cars or near heaters.

  • For long-term storage, keep in a padded box with a small piece of damp cotton nearby to maintain ambient humidity (but not touching the stone).

Professional Checkups

  • Have prongs, claws, and settings inspected every 6–12 months, or sooner if you notice movement, snags, or after a hard knock.

  • A professional jeweller can also polish metal and re-string pearls as needed.

Resizing

  • We do not recommend resizing rings from our Lightning Ridge Opal Collection. Opals are highly sensitive to heat, pressure, and vibration — resizing can cause cracking or damage to adhesives in layered constructions.

Delicate Stones (Handle with Extra Care)

  • Opal, pearl, peridot, and some garnets require special care.

  • Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning, hard knocks, and extreme temperature changes.

  • Always use the gentlest hand-cleaning method and the softest cloth available.
